Report on the preliminary season of the Lepcis Magna Coastal Survey

In October–November 2010 a pilot survey was carried out along the coastal landscape west of Lepcis Magna from the Villa of the Odeon. Intensive new building activities, in particular the development of tourist villages and luxury villas, made this archaeological survey particularly urgent. Earlier plans for a longer programme of research over several years were interrupted by the revolution in Libya; however, it is hoped that work can resume in the near future, and in the meantime the first overview of the season is given here. The survey revealed 52 ancient sites, including productive villas, ceramic kilns, sites equipped for oil and/or wine production and fish processing installations. This survey adds to previous archaeological work in the area and highlights the importance, wealth and economic role of the coastline of Lepcis Magna within the Roman Empire: not only do we see dense occupation, but also a wide range of activities, whether agricultural or the exploitation of marine resources. These results are significant for developing our knowledge of the coastal economy of Tripolitania and for helping to characterise the nature of production and how this may be linked to wider Mediterranean trading networks

Design of Flat Gain UWB Tapered Slot Antenna for on-body Concealed Weapons Detections

The detection of human body worn concealed weapons based on the late time resonance (LTR) method is a considerable challenge. Successful LTR extraction to identify the target signature and its correct interpretation requires UWB antenna, which can cover the frequency of the fundamental (lowest) complex natural resonance (CNR) of the target(s) under detection. A flat gain UWB tapered slot antenna with operating bandwidth of 0.25–3 GHz to cover the lowest CNR frequencies was designed and fabricated. Antenna tests made in an anechoic chamber provide complete back scattering and signal radiation data. The results showed that the fabricated antenna has relative flat gain from about 0.3 GHz to just over 3 GHz with distortion less narrow pulse transmission

CURRENT STATE AND THREATS OF SOIL RESOURCES IN RASINA CATCHMENT UPSTREAM FROM "ĆELIJE" WATER RESERVOIR

In this paper is presented status of soils in catchment Rasina in relation to soil organic matter, acidification and content of heavy metals. Heavy metals and other sulphate and nitrogen oxides by wet and dry deposition reach terrestrial ecosystems, accumulate in the surface layers, and cause changes on chemical composition of soil. Soil was sampled in cross over the catchment above water reservoir "Celije" in forest and agricultural ecosystems on dominant soil types. At each site the soil was sampled at organic layer, 0-5, 5-10, 10 -20 and 20 - 40 cm by taking cores, and at each site was opened soil profile for determination soil type. The air dried soils were milled and digested with aqua regia in a reflux system. The content of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn) of the extracts were determined by AAS. The VSD model was applied to assess the soil chemistry reaction and simulated the damage and recovery time delays, due to changing acid deposition. ArcGIS softver was used to show spatial distribution of different acidification levels.

Analysis the importance of the Implementation of the projects for recycling waste in the Middle East

This study highlights the importance of recycling waste in the Middle East, both in terms of the protection of the environment and for economic viability. The research shows the efforts so far made throughout the world in relation to the positive effects of recycling waste aluminium, paper, wood, oil, glass and other materials. It introduces the three basic pillars for "sustainable development" - environmental protection, economic development and furtherance of desired social outcomes. In addition, it considers the importance of recycling throughout the world, focusing on some example countries that attach great importance to recycling. The countries that are largely successful are also considered. The costs and benefits of recycling programs are considered. The implementation of these programs and projects also needs to be studied. This research summarizes the importance of recycling projects and the extent of the economic and environmental benefits. It also offers some suggestions and recommendations for the Middle East in achieving the maximum benefit in implementation. This study concludes that the lack of success enjoyed so far by the recycling industry in the Middle East can be traced to a lack of public awareness of the importance of the industry. Recycling benefits the economy and the environment. Many recycling industries are already successful in the Middle East. Particularly, recycling of metals has gained significant ground of late. However, the Middle Eastern States have been unable so far to change the behaviour and patterns of their populations to encourage greater recycling. The people simply do not yet see recycling products as a priority or necessity. A significant investment is therefore needed by States to educate their populace. This education must focus on the economic feasibility of recycling metal, plastic, paper and electronics.

أجريت هذه الدراسة المعملية لدراسة تأثير كل من نسبة كربونات الكالسيوم في التربة وطريقة إضافة الأسمدة النيتروجينية في التربة على تطاير الأمونيا، حيث تم إضافة نوعين من الأسمدة النيتروجينية هما اليوريا وفوسفات ثنائي الأمونيوم إلى ترب تختلف في محتواها من كربونات الكالسيوم ، وتم إضافة الأسمدة فوق سطح التربة وتحت يوما من إضافة الأسمدة تزداد كلما زادت نسبة 20سطح التربة . أوضحت النتائج أن كمية الامونيا المتطايرة بعد كربونات الكالسيوم في التربة، وكذلك كانت كمية الأمونيا المفقودة بالتطاير من الأسمدة النيتروجينية المضافة فوق سطح التربة أكثر من تلك المتطايرة من الأسمدة المضافة تحت سطح التربة في الترب الطينية والرملية . الكلمات الدالة :- الأسمدة ، تطاير الأمونيا ، كربونات الكالسيوم ، طريقة إضافة الأسمدة.
